Perhaps the most famous doctor in the world at this moment, Dr.Fauci - the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases - admitted earlier this month that he is ‘not convinced’ that the Covid-19 pandemic developed naturally.
The 80 years old doctor expresses his doubt when answering a question from PolitiFact’s editor and suggests that we [the United States] should continue to “investigate what went on in China until we continue to find out to the best of our ability what happened".
Dr.Fauci then added that while he thinks that investigators have reason to suspect that the virus originates from animal reservoirs, he also put forward that “it could be something else” and that he is “perfectly in favor of any investigation that looks into the origin of the virus.”
This is quite shocking as the statement contradicts entirely against some of his previous statements, including his interview with National Geographic where he commented: "If you look at the evolution of the virus in bats and what's out there now, [the scientific evidence] is very, very strongly leaning toward this could not have been artificially or deliberately manipulated ... Everything about the stepwise evolution over time strongly indicates that [this virus] evolved in nature and then jumped species."
Similar to Dr.Fauci, multiple high profile figures including the Former United States President - Donald Trump has previously expressed their doubts about the “true origin “ of the virus. The 45th POTUS is quoted saying that he has a “high degree of confidence” that the virus originated from a lab. However, when pressed about where he got such information, the President only offered: “ I can't tell you that. I'm not allowed to tell you that."
Ever since the outbreak, there have been multiple conspiracy theories about the origin of the virus and it doesn’t help that the government of China has been actively trying to sway international investigators from diving deeper into finding out the root cause. Nevertheless, as of now, there is little we can say for certain about where the pandemic originated from. However, it must also be added, as perfectly commented by Chris Cillizza from CNN, “Tracing [the root of the virus] is, at root, a medical and public health question -- not a political one.”
